Pegasus 3 Report: Kavan Smith

Okay, I’m trying to remember a hell of a lot here. Hahaha. And my memory is terrible so if some parts don’t make much sense or I have got something wrong, please tell me so I can correct it. Thanks. I’m gonna be writing each guest report up separately, I think, because they’ll probably turn out to be quite long and I can post the photos with them too. Kavan first.

Kavan was really funny. He seemed to really enjoy talking to everyone and told quite a few stories one involving an enema, a really embarrassing moment with his car, a girl and a large cup of Coke, another one about a practical joke he played on his Grandmother which nearly went horribly wrong ;) and then filming a scene of The 4400 and having Joel Gretsch accidentally knee him in that painful place. LOL. He was really nice though. He told everybody how proud he was of his son and that he’s brought his wife and baby to London with him. Apparently he writes a lot too, weird and surreal stories, but none are published. Kavan also said that if he were to write an episode of Atlantis, it would be dark and weird with something bad happening to Rodney. HAHA.

The enema story was bloody hilarious. Poor man. I think he will probably regret telling anybody about that. Kavan was doing a scene for a film, never said which one, which involved him in some water rapids. Well, the rapids part of the river was too dangerous and unpredictable so they had to recreate them using jet boats. He was carefully lowered into the water, facing away from the boats, once he was in he started to notice that the water was getting a little painful. It turned out that the water jets were going through his suit or whatever and he ended up having a really painful enema. I think the director thought Kavan was still acting. Whoops!

Another story he told was when he was a bit younger. He was driving in his car along a road, and noticed that there was this really good looking girl in the car next to him. So every time he came up to her, he’d sit there looking “cool”. Hahaha. So this went on for a while, she’d move forward a bit and he’d speed up and do the same thing. They got to some traffic lights and Kavan, who had one of those really large cups of Coke, thought it would be a great idea to throw it out the window, while trying to look “cool”. It kinda backfired. The window was closed and the Coke bounced back and the nearly full cup emptied all over him and his car. Apparently he sank really low into his, now sticky, chair and the minute he got the chance, sped off!

When Kavan was little, he decided it would be really funny to play a trick on his Grandmother. He and his younger brother staged a fight, and when she walked into the room, Kavan threw his brother out of the window, who landed safely on a mattress outside. As their Grandmother started to get panic stricken and angry, his brother and a couple of friends moved the mattress out of eyesight and made a puddle of ketchup so that when the woman looked out the window it would look like Kavan’s brother was lying in a pool of blood. Looking back on it, he realised that it probably wasn’t the best trick to pull on a lady of her age. They nearly gave her a heart attack. She was okay though… I think. Hahaha.

And finally, when Kavan and Joel were filming a scene of The 4400, I think it would have been Fear Itself, and Kavan had to act out that his teeth were falling out, which they filmed twice: once to show him spitting his teeth out and again to show nothing happening, because it’s a hallucination. Anyway Kavan’s character, Agent Garrity, eventually had to writhe in pain on the floor and Joel Gretsch was to come over to help him out. Well when Joel came over, while they were filming, he crouched down and accidentally knelt on Kavan’s groin. Ouch! So, when you watch it, Kavan said you suddenly see this moment where he looks as if he’s acting like he’s in a lot of pain, which he was!

Kavan was asked a question that if Lorne was in charge of Atlantis, what would he do? Play house music over the comm system, of course! I think Atlantis needs a bit of music like that to cheer everybody up. “OMG THE WRAITH ARE ATTACKING! Okay, let’s rave!” Hahahahahaha! I’d probably request a new DJ. Not really into house. But the idea that he’d put all the scientists in a room together, and then gas them sounds pretty cool. LOL! And he would also make sure that all new recruits played twister, I think it was nekkid twister, to break the ice! Riiiiiiight. If Kavan was to have a superpower, he’d like to be able to make fireballs come out of his eyes, or be able to crush people with brainwaves. ~~Superman~~ SuperKavan?

My photo session with him was pretty funny. He asked where I was from, and I said Hampshire (because the accent was obvious that I’m English) and he knew where that was. But he walked away. LOL! He was like “Oh.” And went. He was kidding of course. Kavan’s such a funny guy. It was really nice to meet him.

I made some icons for The Science of Sleep. Most of them are of Stephane, because I couldn't find any screencaps *sigh* (If anybody can point me in the right direction..) A few of them are the same picture, I was just experimenting with different crops. If you haven't seen the film, you must. It's really quirky and funny and sweet and weird. All in one.

TUTORIAL 001.
This is my first icon tutorial.
Made using PSCS2. Possibly translatable? You'll have to play around.

ONE.
Start with your base, crop and resize. I chose Paul McGillion in A Dog’s Breakfast.
Screencap credit goes to SGAngeL over at the forum on www.chevronone.com.

TWO.
Duplicate layer, sharpen and set to Screen at 100%.

THREE.
This image has a very yellowish hue, so we want to try and get rid of that.
Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color

Reds
+35, 0, -14, 0
Yellows
+76, 0, -38, 0

FOUR.
Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves

RGB
183, 197
66, 84
Red
207, 194
79, 64

FIVE.
Duplicate all current layers and merge them together.

SIX.
Duplicate merged layer, and set to Soft Light 100%.

SEVEN.
New exclusion layer at 70%: 0a0d2a
New color burn layer at 100%: fcf3e7
New soft light layer at 100%: aae2f0

EIGHT.
We can stop there, but I like to experiment a lot so I continued.
Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast
Contrast: +15

And add a scratchy/dusty texture. I got mine from peoplemachines.

Feel free to skip or add some steps to this if you want. You might need to do some tweaking anyway, depending on the base that you use. I'd love to see what you've come up with as well.
